I am looking at another A series option for my ‘final’ motor for the coupe (high compression A14)
As such I would need to move on my other modified A series motor, to fund and clear some space.
I have a Fully worked Reg Cook A15 motor, which will be available should I proceed down this other track.
The problem with it, is it needs new pistons fitted (was a running motor, but was a little smokey) I thought it had a broken oil ring, but when I removed head, it painted an obvious picture as it had a cracked piston.
Upon pulling the sump off I noticed that some skirts were broken on other pistons. I think from memory the pistons were A14, 20’ oversize, that had been machined to suit.
You are looking at about $250-400 for replacement piston/ring kit depending on which type you use.
The motor will be supplied with everything you need excluding flows and carbs, although I will supply the head matched ported dellorto manifold. machined flywheel & race clutch included (as balanced to the motor)
Basically it needs the block honed (for peace of mind) new slugs fitted, and new gaskets as required and assembled. The bores look pretty good, and even #4 looks to be OK, but it would pay to ‘mic’ them up before finalizing piston selection, in case it needs another 20’ off, due to any non-visible elongation from the damaged piston.
I have not removed crank, and expect bearing etc are all fine, as according to previous owner it has not done a lot of work since build (like 10 or 12 club motor sport events or the likes). I dyno’d this motor before it was inspected, when it was roughly tuned and it made 109HP @ just over 6,000rpm with the cracked piston (ie compression would have been right down on #4, as piston was cracked right through, and rings were effectively holding it together!)
The Long block has had a heap spent on it and I have reciepts for $4400 spent on main build in mid 2007 from Reg Cook.
It has had extensive work, with some Reg Cook tricky stuff undertaken, with oil pump upgrade, crank & valve work, porting & machining & balancing etc.
PM me if interested and want to discuss further.
I could strip off and sell in parts, but thought would offer as near complete setup in first instance, as relatively easy fix for someone who wants a well spec’d motor that has had all the hard work done, at a fraction of the build cost.
EOI - Reg Cook A15 road/race engine
Re: EOI - Reg Cook A15 road/race engine
man you sure have the datsun bug bad, your worse than me, (was thinking of putting an a series back in the 2 door)
just curious as to why you dont repair the a15 and use that,I know id build an a14 over an a15 if I was starting from scratch, but I have always regretted selling off my race motor and dogleg box carbs etc, for the sake of a re-ring on the engine.
I swear if id kept all that gear my car would probably be done by now.
Sounds like the a15 is a freshen up from having your car running. just my 2 cents, hope not to offend

Re: EOI - Reg Cook A15 road/race engine
Wal I have rebuilt A15 in the car now, mildly worked, but its not balanced or particularly high compression.
I plan this to be my get the car up and going motor, then it will become my back up motor.
The Reg Cook A15 was to be my primary motor once I get the car on the road.
I know of a rebuilt balanced A14 (short block) I can maybe get my hands on, and think the A14 would really sing with the ITB's it is balanced and has Mazda pistons etc. would plan to then just bolt my top end on that motor.

well that makes a lot of sense, the a14 revs better than the a15, wish id kept my setup, would cost 3-4 times what I got for it to replace.

So here are some pics.
Motor is wrapped in shrink wrap, so hard to get decent pics
but pics of head (H89 with 37mm inlet valves) clutch, flywheel etc below,
also photo of cracked #4 piston, and the #4 bore (hard to show it but
there are no gouges or scrapes)

Re: EOI - Reg Cook A15 road/race engine
would consider selling the short block for a pretty good price.
ie block, sump, crank, rods, pistons (stuffed), cam, balanced flywheel & clutch.
As I am happy to hold on to the head
