CA18i VS CA18DE Gearbox Help

Post by brocky41 »

Hey guys - my mate just brought a C33 Laurel with a blown CA18i (Single OH Cam and single point injection eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww). Ill take some pics as its just so funny - is all factory with 2 brake boosters , must have been a driver training car to - at least it wouldnt have been all that quick haha.

Just wondering it has a 5 speed in it and thought maybe the gearbox would bolt up to the CA18DE in my Y?????

Any Help much appreciated as ill pull it out today anyway.

Cheers Brock.

I think the bell housing patten is the same. I know guys have fitted twin cam heads to single cam blocks, so thay can't be that dissimilar. (Only a guess though)
They don't call me the man with the rubber arm for nothing you know.............

CA71B #2 is stamped on the side - whats the difference between this one and a CA18DE 5 speed - 120y is to low to see the number.

I've got a ca18et box stashed somewhere, would most likely be the same as the ca18i box. From memory, it was slightly shorter than a DET box.

So it was like a B box but with the C style inclosed gear linkages.

Can't see any reason why it wouldn't go on a ca18de. Ppl over here put ca20 boxes on ca18det, only thing you'd need to check is what starter motor you'd use.

the casting no. indicates it should fit your ca18de motor
the differance between turbo box and non turbo box is in the ratios, the no,s on the side are quality control from the casting outfit, (batch no) basicilly because they cast these in 3 shifts over 24 hours if there was a problem with one casting they would be able to track all castings from that shift. only way to tell which is a turbo box and which is a non turbo is the first and second gear ratio,s are differant .
From memory the non turbo first gear is taller. ie longer between gear changes.
does this make sense?
