Martin's P510 SSS restoration.

Post by Martin SSS »

Here is a quick rundown of my P510 SSS rebuild. I am the second owner of the car. Bought it out of a deceased estate. Old lady bought it new in 1973. When we took the covers off the back seats, there was QC marks on it dating it to October 1973. It has taken me a year to get to this point. The only issue I still have is getting the right windscreen rubbers. SA spec was different to the rest of the world. Anycase, it is a real pleasure driving around in it.

This is what I started with:

The big stripdown.I stripped every piece from the car. Everything was labelled and stored away. Later on I cleaned each and every bolt and nut. Whatever I could replaced with new stuff was replaced. Others were refurbished

Child labour. I was fortunate enough to have my 11yo daughter help me with the restoration. Unfortunately other forum members decided to do this to her. She was quite chuffed.

Off to the sandblasters. Every part that could handle sandblasting, was sandblasted. The body was primered immediately after the blasting with marine primer.

Botch job on bonnet repair. There was a dent in the bonnet, but the first panel guy tried to cover it with filler. The second outfit picked this up and we decided it was not worth repairing. This forced me to find a new bonnet. I got one that was stored in someones garage for 20 years. An original from Nissan Japan.

New coil springs too long. The replacement coil springs were way to long and through a process of trial and error I got them to the length I wanted. It did take me a week of stripping, cutting and fitting though.

My BIL, that stays in Aucland, have begged me to sell it to him. He says he would make a killing selling it to you guys. :D He told me to log onto your local Datto websites to tease you guys. He recons you guys love your Datsuns. Anyway, if you want to kill him, I'll galdly supply his address. He still owes me money for marrying his sister.

Followed this build closely on the other datto forums, I would be happy if my build had half the quality of yours!
