A15 getting hot.

Post by jas1200 »

I,m having probs with my a15 running hot, the temp gauge goes almost to the H down the motorway to Lower hutt, I have to stop and let it cool down and I notice steam coming out the overflow pipe from the raidiator. Sofar i,ve checked the raidiator for a blockage (I ran the garden hose through it), a couple of bits came out but nothing that create a blockage. I also taken the water pump off and checked the fins (all ok), and i,ve taken out the theromatate (spelling). I,m starting to think its got a blockage in the engine block.
The history of the engine is that its done 3000 or 4000 miles on new rings and bearings but on a trip down to Chch in Feb without a temp gauge it heat seased and blew a heat gasket (it was f...n hot, it was so hot that there was smoke coming out between the head and the block). Anyway, manged to limp to chch and fixed the head gasket with Barts help. But once I got a temp gauge working I noticed its running hot.

Anyone have an idea on the prob.....

I would hazard a guess that , it may have at best, warped the head at worst cracked the head or even split a liner, if its been as hot as you suggest, it probably wont be a quick fix,

I'd suggest getting the radiator serviced. Are the fins on the radiator solid?

The head was skimmed here in CHCH.
I wouldn't put much stock in how freely water water from the hose runs through the radiator Jase. Water can still flow through a radiator that wont be able to keep an engine cool. what condition are the fins between the tubes in? The fins need to be in good order to conduct heat from the tubes into the air.
Maybe try running a dishwasher tab through your cooling system, then give it a couple of flushes to get all the residue out.
Did it still run hot with the thermostat out? Did you test the thermostat?

Yes it did warp the head, I had it planed and I,m sure it was presure tested (i,m not sure what a liner is), it was also hardnest tested. The fins in the radiator are all good but will check again tomorrow.
A dishwasher tab sounds like a good idea. No I did,nt test the thermostat but I took it out befor the Chch trip because it was pushing water out the overflow. I think it had a blowen head gasket befor the Chch trip because I used cement when I put the head on after the freshen up.

Today I flushed out the block and the radiator again, still to put a dish washer tap through.......nothing much came out of the block or radiator but I noticed some of the fins are solf on the grill side of the radiator.....starting to think its a stuffed radiator.
