Best place to do water feed and return on L series Turbo

Post by unlimitedpower »

Well ive been playing round a bit more with the engine got manifolds all sorted etc.
Just wondering about the water lines for turbo. Or more importantly there locations.

I found a random bung on block which i fitted a brass 90 to so will prob take the water feed from there.
Was going to return it back to the thermostat housing, But not totally sure if thats a good idea or not cos i would be feeding really hot water right into the thermostat possibly causing it to open sooner than it should or wider than it should,
Is this a problem?
Would it be better to add a fitting to the radiator and feed it into the top tank somewhere?

Im not really sure how they do it in the factory as i haven't really had alot to do with turbo cars.

When my mate had a watercooled turbo on his L28 I'm pretty sure he used the drain bung near the rear of the block for the feed and returned it into the top of the thermostat housing, can't remember how well it worked though! Maybe a fitting into the top hose would work too?

Something like an RB20 has a bung half way up the block for the turbo water feed and the return goes straight into the back of the waterpump.

Sweet thanks for that. My only real concern was feeding hot water straight into the thermostat housing.

Plenty of folks tap into the heater lines for the water feed - just before the heater for the feed and just after for the return. Or if you're concerned about returning to the thermostat housing you could use your 90° fitting for the feed and tap into the heater lines just before the heater core for the return - I'm sure it would be very nice and toasty on those cold winter days!
