Re: My C32 Laurel 5 speed turbo yeah boi!
Did another bit of driving today, I was thinking to myself that it must be unusual to have a gearbox that's so noisy in every gear except 4th where it's dead silent - then I realised that in 4th the rubbery surround thing which is split has the split all closed up. It's amazing how much noise it deadens! Brock kindly gave me some insulating foamy stuff to put over it which he's used successfully, so I'll fit that and see what happens. I'll also put the centre console back on, it's the auto one so there will be a big hole with no gearboot where the shifter used to be - looking forward to having something to put my coffee in again!
The high idle (1500rpm) is getting pretty annoying so I'll see if I can resolve that tomorrow.
In other news, my catalytic converter temp light came on randomly tonight. I find this highly unusual since I removed the cat almost a year ago.... this could require some investigation....

Enjoy John, good effort. 4th gear is also 1:1, it is the only gear the Spigot / Pilot Bearing inside the input shaft is not turning and the shafts are locked together. might also be an explanation for the noise being different.

Fourth gear is the only gear where there is no load on the countershaft.
So either your countershaft bearings are ugly, or The countershaft itself is coozed.
Bit disapointing if you've had someone have the cogbox apart, and this is the outcome.

Its just the rubber boot for the gearstick hole thats split - 4th gear is quiet because the gearstick holds the split closed ie more air comes in from outside in every other gear.Bartman wrote:Fourth gear is the only gear where there is no load on the countershaft.

Like running no boot in an a series - just believe me - its an air rushing into the car noise not gear noise.
