That sounds sooooo goood.
They don't call me the man with the rubber arm for nothing you know.............
Re: DJZ's 280ZX
Hmm just tried to post this but it disappeared. Got some of my bits today.
The manifold looks really good, only problem is the wastegate flange, it's for a 60mm HKS gate and has the seat for the valve built in to it by the looks of it, not sure what I'm going to do there. I don't really want to chop it up and a 60mm Tial gate is probably just as expensive as an HKS gate? I need to try it in the car and see whether it's going to clear the chassis rail before doing anything else. The wastegate pipe on this one is massive compared to the old one.
Oil pump has a little bit of scratching to the front of it probably from someone trying to remove the cam belt drive gear which is the most annoying and painful thing to do on an RB engine.
Got the cams as well but probably not much point in taking a photo of those, I might take a photo of the standard cam vs. the new ones. Hopefully I'll have the crank back over the next couple of days, I chased them up last week to see how they were going. I've got pretty much everything to put the bottom end back together now apart from a couple of new bits (including a new cam pulley gear) that I have to get from Scott at some stage. The head is probably about 40% done, haven't touched the exhaust ports yet and I need to notch it for the cam lobes.

Re: DJZ's 280ZX
Could you machine up an adapter flange to adapt from the HKS to the Tial setup ?
it would mean 2x V bands fairly close to each other but not chopping up a legit HKS manifold ?

Re: DJZ's 280ZX
Very nice. This should be quite a weapon when going again!
Re: DJZ's 280ZX
wow that manifold is super super sexy, those welds are beautiful
Re: DJZ's 280ZX
The welds onto the flange are really cool, they're nice and shiny for some reason, maybe 'cause the flange is steel not stainless?2 doors wrote:wow that manifold is super super sexy, those welds are beautiful
I did a trial fit and it sits the turbo pretty much in the same place as the other one, probably because the old one is a copy of one of these.
It's kind of coming back to me that one of the other reasons for moving the wastegate position on the old manifold is that the wastegate and downpipe were trying to occupy the same space. I won't be able to do much with this manifold till I get the car back and pull the RB20 out, unless I drop the 26 into the other 2 seater to mock things up? Hmm.
Re: DJZ's 280ZX
Picked up the crank today, it came out really nice. Next thing to do is to take the head off then see about cleaning out the oil galleries etc etc. I don't think there will be any bits of oil pump in them but better to be safe than sorry.
Re: DJZ's 280ZX
Took the head off one night this week, came off really easy. Found a little bit of foreign object damage to the top of number 4 piston, not sure where it came from but it's nothing to worry about I don't think, I gave it a light sand until the high spots were gone. There were also a couple of vertical lines in a few of the bores, I could only feel one with my fingernail but I'm not going to worry about it at the moment.
Started cleaning up the block for reassembly, scraped the rest of the head gasket off the top then went over it lightly with some scotchbright type stuff, will go over it again with thinners before the head goes on.
Cleaned out the "pressure" oil passage between the front of the block and where the filter goes on, nothing in there other than oil. I wasn't going to worry about doing the oil pick up gallery but then decided I may as well, lucky I did as there were a few little flecks of metal in there from the pump, they were too big to fit past the strainer. I kept spraying degreaser through there then blowing it out with air till it was nice a dry and clean.
Will continue with the reassembly when I'm not feeling so tired and have a few hours to dedicate to it. Need to get a new oil pump gasket before that can go on but I have to put the crank in first.
