Re: Datto_610's 180B Off with its head!
Ive seen this happen before to an FJ20et - had the same ticking noise and the magneted out 2 spring washers beaten to a pulp. - difference was he just ran it up etc after (didn't remove head) and it was still mint.
Amazing it can cause that much damage though - do you think it was a nut or washer??

Bore seems mint no gouges or marks that we can feel. I'll put a magnet on whatever it is that has lodged itself in the head it's hard to tell what it is by looking at it. Will check turbo exhaust wheel too

Only issues I can see is if you left it as is the rough edges on the dents etc. could create hot spots promoting detonation etc. and possibly the impacting as the piston hit the object MAY have hammered a minor spot into The big end bearing on #4 .... but he may aswell clean the head up and give it a go for the price of a headgasket and the head a basic tidy up and some time ...it's prob worth seeing if bottom end will last a couple of years+ as it is or not.

Checked whatever it is that's mashed into the head with a magnet last night. It would appear that it's aluminum, so don't know where it came from. Could be a chunk from the head? Or inlet manifold? It's on the exhaust side though.... going to get some quotes to get it repaired today

Got some prices today, all seemed to be around the same so the head is now at HPE and they'll start it on monday

So what are they doing to it? It was a bit hard to see how bad the damage was, is it being welded?

Yeah it will need to be welded, they are going to hardness test it, strip it all down check valves, machine it, I'm going to get some valve stem seals for them to put in too and probably a few other things that Iv'e forgotten. This is the first time I've ever had to take anything from an engine to get machined/repaired before. Pretty much going to make it as good as new so I can put back on.

Got a call from hpe after work yesterday, head is all machined up they just needed valve stem seals to finish it off which I dropped offe this morning. No bent valves super stoked about that. Should have it back before the weekend! Just need head gasket, head studs, cam belt and tensioners and water pump!
