Cleaning block surface during head gasket replacement

Post by broke »

1. What method do y'all recommend for cleaning the block surface for a new head gasket?

2. How should I keep all that crap from falling into the cylinders?

Rags tightly packed into cylinders, gasket scraper with a new blade then sand paper on a wide flat file then clean with lacquer thinners.

Sounds good, what would you do however if one of the pistons was at TDC and virtually flush with the deck surface (and you didn't want to turn the crank for fear of bending the valves in the other head)?

Turn the crank by hand or with a short ratchet? You wouldn't have to turn it much to get them below the top of the deck.

You can unbolt the rocker shaft on the other side to bring the valves back up into the head ,then remove plugs to rotate over easily.
