Buying a 120y

Post by ThreeBlindNinjas »

Hi all, I couldn't find an intro thread. (didn't look really hard though)

Last week I was made aware of a 120Y that may be coming up for sale... After sorting out some cash, and convincing the Ms that it was an investment, it looks highly likely I'll be purchasing it. Might even get to drive it home tomorrow!

Image

It's an auto, and all in all, pretty original. Engine is standard, interior isn't too bad, dash may be cracked. (I only got a quick look at it on Friday)

Can anyone tell me what's with the rear lights? I can't find any pictures/images anywhere of these lights on a 120y, and knowing not to much about Datsuns, I'm not sure if they are original.

Plans for it? WOF and Reg, and drive it. Maybe wheels, flairs, the chin spoiler, and dropping it a couple of inches in the future.

Hi, great looking car.

I just sold a set of these taillights back to Australia for one.

They are a GX ttaillight, not many around, they were mostly on the four and 2 door sedans, most badged as sunny 120y excellent in Japan.
They are factory, def insure it with lights and lenses cover (swan insurance do and if u become a financial member there is discount with them.

There is a gx badge that is meant to go on the lower left of that centre garnish aswell.

Google B210 excellent and you'll find some info

Hey, I am local. give me a call or text if you like.

I would be keen to have a look at the Y, and offer
you advice if required. I had a Y this time last year
and I lowered it and did a manual conversion, and
fitted chin spoiler & mags etc so know whats reqd
to do all this / costs etc.

Cheers, Kitch

Hey Blind Ninjas, welcome to the forum, Look forward to watching progress on this one, all the best with the purchase.
The GX was a spec on the last of the 120Ys sold new in New Zealand in the 210 shape, so these tail lights and a different grill where the external treatment and GX badges on the Bonnet and boot lid I think. I also recall they had cloth trim and a factory rev counter. I am sure there were other 'extras' also, but yes NZ new factory tail lights on the last higher spec model.
Looks good

Hi all,

Good to know that the strange rear lights are the originals. It's nice to have a point of difference!

Hi Kitch... I've seen you around in the orange 4 door. With any luck I'll have the 120y home for the week end. I'll flick you a txt if you want top have a look. It's by no means perfect, and it seems the more I look at it, the more filler and dents I can see, but hey, It's an old car aye!

I wasn't going to panic about changing anything but 12" wheels? I just assumed they were 13's. 14 x 5.5 will be sweet with 185/65 cause that's what I have, assuming I have the right offset.

sweet as - flick me a text - saturday I am free

The Y looks pretty sound from the pics, has the some GX dash & wheel that my one had ah.

as long as your 14" mags are rear wheel drive offset I am sure they will fit. typically 0 to +15 seem to be fine on the 1200's / 120Y's I have had experience with.

No mags... yet... Just steelies! I'm pretty sure they are rwd offset. Might have to paint em, but first things first. WOF check up, and take it from there.

So got the car! Happy days!

Then spent some time sucking out the old gas and putting in some fresh stuff, getting the idle right, checking the bulbs, putting in another alternator, putting some air in the tyres, tuning the AM radio, and generally giving it the once over.

Noticed that there was no brake fluid in the rear pot... none. Put some in. Got down to the back of the car, had a look at the diff, and stuff and noticed that there's been oil dripping down the left wheel. That's where I'm guessing the brake fluid went.

So I drove it home, yes... straight home, and added to the list of cars to be fixed!

WOF will have to wait until next week, until I get some time to sort out what's going on back there. No point taking it in for an obvious fail.
