datto failed wof...and dont know what he means? advice/help?

Post by sunny79datto »

hey guys took my car for a wof yesterday..
knew it was going to fail for the rear tyre..
but he also failed me for Right Front Top Strut has play + leaking shock..
i asked him what he ment and was saying need to replace shock, then he was saying bout replacing the whole strut?
other one was the tyre - thats sweet.
and Right Rear wheel cylinder or hub seal leaking.. so thats not to bad pull the hub out and do the seal. or its going to be the brake cylinder thats leaking ..can see oil sht over the mag.

its just the 1st one thats got me stumped he said thought it was sweet but when he had it jacked up their was movement..
hes chinese so was a bit hard to understand and couldnt really make out what he wanted me to do when i asked him if he'd do it he said could but would have to find parts for it so im guesing he was meaning a strut?
just dont see why that would need replacing its not bent or anything? the shock i can understand if thats leaking but i didnt even know that theirs no sign of that but will take his word for it and see when take the strut out.
any advice would me much appreeciated thanks.

your top strut mount (where the shock bolts through) must have some play in it and needs replacing. Shock leaking is also simple, just needs a new shock.

Not sure on what car you are talking about so hard to be more specific. Shouldnt be hard trakcing down a second had strut mount, and even shocks if you want to do it cheap.

Get the strut out, disassemble it (if you need spring compressors ive got some here - then take the top hat to The Mount Shop in chch - they usually have them on the shelf new, you may also need the bearing for the tophat aswell.

If the shock is leaking id recommend getting a pair and doing both fronts - we should have some in stock at BNT Wairakei - just need your strut tube size from memory.

You'll need to have you new inserts shortened too.
Many new cars, have the shock absorber as a non removable part of the strut leg. So he probably thought you needed to replace the whole strut.

ok so i pulled my strut out got the top hat off and the spring off, i cant see any sing of it having play? is their anyway to tell? he said when had it jacked up it had play? but i cant tell how i was wriggling it while up and wasnt moving if anything the mag was wriggling but not the strut.
i give him that the shock is fkd, i pushed that down and doesnt come back up guess thats not normal?
so whats next should i replace the shock and top hat and take it back?

Pretty much mate.
it's not inconcievable that the lateral movement might have been a severely fucked shock insert.
