S12 front crossmember

Post by DJZ »

I'm after an S12 front crossmember w/power steering rack and preferably the shaft between the rack and steering column. It needs to look like the top one in this picture:

just to let you know, I had a hell of a job finding a replacement S12 PS rack when mine failed.

the power-steer crossmember is different to a non PS model too, as is the shaft to the steering column.

I do know who bought the 3 S12's off trademe a while back, he may be willing to part one out...

Steering box in the DR is starting to get loose again, want to give swapping it over to rack & pinion a go, this is the easiest option (not that I can find anybody that's actually done it) before I start looking at S13 stuff.

you can use s13/s14 racks in an S12 x-member, but they require a little bit of modification.
I think spiderwebfx has done it?

Need an S12 crossmember first, if I can't find one I'll start looking at other options.

Yes, I have done this. Was a bit of a mission, and a custom spline shaft to be made, but it was definitely doable. The S14 ratio is also better than the S12 and S13 racks.

The guy that owns Black Label Performance has a couple of S12's. Maybe get in touch and see if he's willing to sell you one?

Also, it took me about a year to find one, and that was only because nzdatman was a GC and sold me his spare.

Sweet man, thanks. As I said I can't find anybody that's actually done it before so I'm not 100% sure it's going to work but I think it's the best chance of a finding a reasonably "bolt in" rack conversion rather than modifying an S13 crossmember to fit. I've have to tighten the steering box up once because it failed a warrant and it's starting to feel loose again and the car is due for another warrant next month, I might get one more adjustment out of it.

What do you guys think of that white S12 in Christchurch for sale? Over priced?

If you're referring to this one: http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-ca ... 331084.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's way overpriced. Maybe worth around half that with a warrant and rego.

The only reasonable priced S12's I've seen on Trademe in the last two years are the three that David from Black Label Performance bought for $1500.
