Like you say Bart, a rusty Datsun on the road is better than a pristine one in the garage!Bartman wrote:Gotta keep the bastards alive! (and sideways!)

Re: CA 510
Somebody has some explaining to do. I went to take the subframe apart that we just took out of this 510.
The U joint bolts that join the half shafts to the diff were barely more than finger tight.
Then once they were off, the center bolt on each side that goes through the diff flange into the diff were not even done up. They were loose!
What a joke!

There was a nut missing off one of the half shaft outer flange bolts...DylPhil7 wrote:Just as well I didn't drive it from Auckland haha

Possible explanation for the noises you were hearing. My old one has a Subaru R160VLSD and some hero had made it fit by welding the Datsun UJ yoke to the Subaru diff flanges (which are circlipped in), the problem being that it wasn't an ideal setup for a very low car, and one side used to pop out all the time, leaving me with a 1-wheel drive car.
My mate's old 910 SSS-X turbo had a similar issue, it had a factory R180 LSD with circlipped axles and when we put it on a hoist it was clear why they were popping out - some monkey had actually sliced right through the circlip groove, leaving them just loosely sitting in the diff!

I took the drums apart, as the right side was jamming. It turned out the diff was fine. It was the pads off the drum brakes that were off the shoes, causing it all to jam up.broke wrote:Possible explanation for the noises you were hearing. Just an abortion of a rear end.
