1200 wheel stud concerns

Post by luke »

Only thing stopping my front end going on is the whole pressing of the bigger wheel studs in, i dont want the hub to split, and go through that drama like kitch did trying to get a spare.
As the oem larger nissan ones are about 1.5mm bigger o.d. is it better to drill them out slightly to suit?
flatmates an engineer and has all the fancy tools at work to do so, im just concerned that the tiny little slots that stop the stud from spinning are a kinda crucial thing? the last set i bashed in with a hammer in a very crude jig, whats the best approach?

drill the holes a little bigger, get your flatmate to take them to work, along with the new studs and ask one of the old buggers that he works with to guide the process, remember to say please to the old bugger, as they appreciate that kind of thing, and then say thank you very much at the end, they like that too. job done.

Rather than hammer we used to pull them on, using a Ring spanner and a sacrificial nut, tighten the nut, pulling against the ring spanner, not the hub face, this should pull it straight and true if you are careful.

Yeh you will want to drill them out to suit (IIRC you want the hole size to be the smaller diameter of the shaft, i.e. the inside of the splined teeth) and then just press/knock them in.

i used the wrong studs thats why i split a hub. I accidentally used rear studs that had a bigger spigot.
when i used the front ones they were same size of the donor hub set i had (R32 GTS4 spec)
they went in piece of weeze, in fact i didnt have to press them all in, some i could get in with 3 or 4 clean hits of the hammer
but if your studs are bigger you will have to drill, but dont overdrill!
the fine ribs on the stud need to cut into edge of hole to grab obviously
