I have a r30 turbo 5 speed in my 1600 and last time I took it too the track it pissed oil everywhere under my car. I'm no guru on these boxes but was thinking it either has a buggered tail seal or is coming out where the shifter is but wanted to know are these boxes prone for it and do they need a breather when they are taking abuse?
Cheers

R30 turbo gearbox leaking

Re: R30 turbo gearbox leaking
It should have a white plastic breather on the top of the box. Hopefully it's just the tail shaft seal and not the front cover gasket or input shaft seal. I'm not even sure if there is a seal where the gear selector goes into the box, I guess there should be but being one of the higher points on the box it would be odd to leak a lot of fluid from there?

Re: R30 turbo gearbox leaking
Craig if it is the tail shaft it will throw the oil out in a line across the floor in line with the seal. This is obvious if it has a small leak, I guess if it is 'pissing out' as you say, it may not be quite as obvious on the floor where it has come from. Normally ot doesn't travel forward.

If your rear seal is OG, I'd wager it's given up the ghost. Also check the condition of the tail shaft input shaft. If that is worm/pitted/damaged etc that can cause a problem.
another issues I've seen is when the rear bush in the gearbox wears out. This allows the tail shaft front yolk to orbit a little making it lose contact with the seal. While genuine new seals are still available, I'm told a good fix is to fit two plain style oil seals in the rear. doubling up doubles the sealing.

Re: R30 turbo gearbox leaking
Ripped the box out tonight as i couldn't really pinpoint the spot as oil was everywhere so I ripped it out. I found the breather pipe was kinked over not letting the box breath so wondering if it was pressurising and forcing it either oil tail seal or where the shifter is.

It's possible.
Given that it's out, I'd replace ALL the seals just cos you can. They're pretty cheap. Don't forget the O-ring on the speedo drive, and the oil seal where the speedo drive shaft goes through the speedo drive housing.

How kinked was the breather pipe? It's reasonably kinked on all my boxes, (3 of them) but not completely closed off. In the "How to modify your 510" book there it shows that they ran a catch can off that pipe on the BRE cars for the same reason. I never had a need to when I had my last 510 running, but I didn't drive it that hard either.

Re: R30 turbo gearbox leaking
It was kinked to the point I couldn't blow my air gun through out of the compressor. Shit if the bre cars run a catch can they must be prone for it maybe. I replaced the rear seal and a few others tonight and slapped it back in the car so fingers crossed.
