Im putting together L14 Turbo engine for my 140J and was trying to work out if i lighten the flywheel before i put it goes together.
I know a lighter flywheel will rev faster which is great but between gears when you come off the gas the revs drop quicker to.
Has anyone had any experience in this area and can recommend anything.
Another downside is if the flywheel is lightened it will need to be balanced.
If i don't lighten it it would just need a grind and would be ready to go back in.
Feel free to through up your opinions and if you think it should be lightened what would the target weight be?

Lightened fly wheel will spin up quicker, gear shifting is not an issue unless you are using a road ranger, in the time it takes to shift a gear revs will about match.
You may notice it on hills, but really with a Turbo application you will be sweet.
Have you balanced all rotating mass? (And reciprocating) if you are going for big power, balancing is a must, I noticed a huge difference with my A12, much smoother up high.

If it's going to be ruthless, and driven hard lots, then I would say yes.
If it's going to see lots of traffic driving then probably not such a good idea.
My A12 (stock as) has a light flywheel. It's a complete whore to get off the line with a trailer on the back or some passengers.

Na not going for big power just having a play round with the OEM nissan parts bin.
If i was after big power i would have used a L20B.
Haven't balanced the rotating assembly. But if i was to get the flywheel lightened that would most certainly require a rebalance as you are removing the material that was balanced from factory.
The flywheel in question is 10.6kg at present in untouched form.

I have mixed feelings on lightened flywheels, they seam to lose the punch off the foot if you know what I mean.
They rev better but lose the feel of been pegged back in the seat.
Anyway thats my thoughts great question.
