Messed up my timing :(

Post by C.Randall »

Okay so I have an l18 on my engine stand I've been slowly working on when starting to remove the head I went to take off cam sprocket getting so caught up with getting it off I didn't set the cam (whole timing) to a specific spot and since then the crank has moved also how do I match them up so we can all be happy again.
First time striping a motor if you can't tell.
Thanks!

How far were you planning on stripping it? If the crank has moved I'm guessing you didn't block up the chain to stop the tensioner falling out?

I was only planning on having head cleaned I did block chain but only to stop falling through. If tenstion has fallen out chain will not reach sprocket right?

Yup, usually it will be just off fitting back on the nose of the cam. The crank shouldn't have turned much if the chain is blocked. How far off top dead centre is the crank?

I've done it before by just just putting the head back on, put the bolt that holds the cam pulley in but don't do it up tight so the dowel isn't in the hole then rotate the crank & cam slowly till you get the crank back to TDC then worry about getting the cam in the right position.

So if I replace tenstioner and guiders which I should do anyway I can set cam and crank to tdc. It will have to be spot on though aye? As long as I havent completly stuffed it where it has to be fully striped

Yup, that'll be the easiest and best way to make sure it's correct.

Man its an easy fix take the front cover off do what you have to do to the head and one of us will come around and do the cam timing takes two minutes.
