DJZ's other 280ZXs
Re: DJZ's other 280ZXs
how far down would the motor need to go to clear the bonnet? , I cant see the problem with altering the sump, Im probably something missing that's obvious?
Re: DJZ's other 280ZXs
The angle of the sump is wrong, the flat bit (the bottom of the sump) should be parallel with the crossmember, like this:
I'll try and copy the right hand mount that I used in the other Z, the left hand 200ZR steel mount is the same as an VL RB30 mount, that should bring the motor down a bit and level it out. I might be able to lower the motor even more as this car doesn't have a power rack but that depends on what I do with the sump.

you could do what ive done here, and cut a notch out of the top, and weld some extra metal underneath

Re: DJZ's other 280ZXs
Thought I'd have a quick look at the engine mounts for the 2 seater, from what I can figure out the line at the top of the 26 cam belt front cover should be parallel with the ground.
The front timing belt covers are different between the 30s and 26s, so I had to fit an oil pump on to the 30 to mount the 26 cover. One of the annoying things about RBs is you can't get the oil pump on and off with the sump on because of one of the backing plate bolt holes and also the pressure relief valve fitting, so I cut these off the broken N1 pump so I can use it as a dummy pump.
So the first thing to check is that the car is level, I got this clinometer app for my phone which is really handy! Now amazingly even with different wheels and tyres left and right the radiator support panel is perfectly level according to my phone.
With my calibrated pieces of aluminium and wood across the cam belt cover the motors is sitting slightly too far over towards the right (which I knew by looking at it anyway), so the engine mount on the right hand side needs to be shortened a little bit exactly the same as the black car. It's only around 2 degrees but will make more room on the turbo side of the engine bay and I need a starting point for building the sump nice and level.

Hey dan long time no squeak! Good to see you've still got the energy of the energizer bunny when it comes to working on cars!

Yo man, what are you up to these days? We should catch up at some stage.Blazing Bullet wrote:Hey dan long time no squeak! Good to see you've still got the energy of the energizer bunny when it comes to working on cars!
I've decided to try and sell off the RB30 and spare 26 head etc etc, I don't really want two RB powered Z's. I've been collecting all sorts of different L series bits and pieces and have been offered the old head off my 3.1L back, I would like to build another turbo L series but I'm also leaning towards a V8 still, probably a VK45.
So I'm undecided about engines but what I have decided is that I really need to do something with the black car first before I do anything else to this.
Re: DJZ's other 280ZXs
Not sure if I'll actually use this for this car but anyway! I bought a complete Z31 rear subframe and front 5 stud hubs off one of the guys in the Z Club, according to James it should be a 3.54:1 ratio R200, it's got the big 4x1 flanged turbo axles like I've got in the black car. Hopefully the rear hubs aren't worn out, I'll find out when I pull it to pieces.

Re: DJZ's other 280ZXs
Saw a guy wrecking a crashed Cima on Trademe so I asked him about the engine, he didn't want much for it but it's got a couple of broken bits on it, decided to buy it and got the auto bell housing as well. It's a VK45DE, I don't really need it right now as this is going to be the last car that actually gets worked on but it was too good a deal to pass up (I think). Got it home and can't actually put it in the engine frame because the bell housing to engine bolts are huge, M14x1.5 and I don't have anything like that at home so it's going to sit on the ground until Monday.
