Wiring in a rev counter

Quick question regarding wiring in a factory rev counter. With the ignition wire do I have to cut the wire and join each end of the wire to the rev counter wires so this makes one circuit, or can I just strip the ign wire slightly and solder the rev counter wires on with out cutting the ign wire? Sorry if it is a dumb question but have been told both way are ok but not keen on frying my wiring if i do it wrong...

Usually you run it through a loop at the back.
Don't cut it or strip it
