The Tale of 7 Coupes

Post by 7 Coupes »

During the intermission I though I might profile the Coupes that bought us to number 7

Details are shading and pictures even more so but It will at least serve as a record for the Datsun Brothers

Coupe 1, there are some pic's at the beginning of this thread, she came to us pretty beat up but you must remember I was a poor little apprentice and my Dad a panel beater so $750 was a small price to pay for the less than 10 year old Coupe at the time, (say a 2005 model in today's standard)

It seemed that the repairs went pretty quick and not a panel was bought nor do I remember spending much money on it so lets say $900 on the road

It was the best car in the family for a while and the fastest by a mile, (100mph on a bit of a down hill run to be precise), My first time to reach the magic ton and can still visualise the speedo dial sitting there even today

Will go forage through some old albums to find a relevant picture

Proud owner (somewhat younger than now)

Coupe 1 proved to be a faithful companion and a great building block for learning about performance mods.

The first thing to go on was some extractors (bought from Wolf Mufflers which is still around today).
This was a good mod and estimate it gave about a 5% increase in power plus improved the fuel consumption, but not for long as next came the Classic foam and mesh air filter and a bigger primary jet to calm the by now lean stumble these extra bits had made worse, think we were up about 15% in Hp with the inclusion of a bigger bore exhaust and with fuel consumption at nearly 40mpg around town and 45mpg at between 70-80mph on a trip was pretty close to stock but with quite a bit more stick :dance2:

Awesome, the primer grey front reminded me of my 1st one there. Looking forward to further installments of your journey.

Thanx for sharing, that would have been one cool first car. Great skills your old man showed. The young guys won't realise what it was like trying to get a decent car back then. Jap imports have made awesome cars so available and cheap.
I saw a Mini on the lot the other day, it was nine years old and about $14000, I thought that was a bit rich till some quick maths told me it was equal to a quarter of what I paid for my 9 yr old 120Y as an apprentice, relative to what I earned.
And the availability of parts today compared to then also. No trade me, no Taiwanese guards, no internet to find out what John in Auckland had used to mod his car, let alone Juan in Portugal.
I look forward to further instalments

I figured it cost me 5 weeks wages all up at the time, My brother bought Coupe 2 mint as and with 30k miles on it (which I'll talk about later) for 4 x as much a year later, so 20 weeks wages say 18- 20k in today's money :x

Will continuing my reminisce but am going to get desperate for pictures soon :!:

Ps, My Dad was a magician by today's standard and I remember him telling me that when he was an apprentice they used to make guards from scratch on the rollers, phew
