1600 steering box oil

Post by hsepwr »

My steering box in the 1600 was leaking so I pulled it to bits and fixed it.
Can anyone confirm what oil is ment to be in these so I can sort it out.

cheers

do you have a workshop manual, states all fluids needed in there. I think its castrol hypoid ep90 gearbox and diff oil (thats from memory and my memory is notoriously poor from a misspent youth!!)

Id use something like moreys or lucas heavy duty oil stabiliser. I dunno what your suposed to use, but with so few moving parts I doubt you could go wrong with that stuff.

how thick is this heavy duty oil stabiliser?
i wouldnt say theres few moving parts, the ball nut on the column is filled with ball bearings, about 36 from memory.

Hypoid gear oil 90 EP is whats stated for steering boxs, so an 85w90 gearbox/diff oil would be perfect.

You can run moreys/lucas in gearboxes and diffs, so it should be okay for a steering box. It sticks like shit to a blanket, so There would be zero chance of any parts of the steering box going unprotected.
