RX7 Oil cooler

Post by torqued »

Hey,

Ive recently got my grubby little mits on a RX7 oil cooler.
Its s5 type with a thermostat in it.

Now my question is does the thermostat by-pass the cooler when closed or does it act as a gate to stop the oil flow all together?

Howd you get around using it? did you have a pressure relief valve on the sandwich block or something?

My understanding is that when your oil temp is below a given spec, the oil will bypass the the cooler. Your engine will get raped if your oil is cold as fuck all the time. Outside a racetrack, you'll rarely see high oil temps anyways.

Exacatly why i wanted a thermostat on it. the thermostat is on the cooler it's self and visually looks like it just gates the oil. which means ill have to find something to releif the flow earlier on

Worked it out

The thermostat in the cooler does not block oil flow through the cooler, Im pretty sure it acts as a pressure release valve so the cooler doesn't pop. It acts as a bypass valve also
