Opinions on motor opition.
Hey guys in the next two years i have no idea what im going to do, i hope i get an apprentiship but i might have to go to polytech in which case i cant consider this. but if im on the pay roll I wanna get a new Motor.
Heres whats in mind.
A15.
L20b.
CA18de.
I am not interested in turbos. Blair said i should prob go for CA cos i can get alot more power out of it. and its lighter.
Yeah voice your opinion give me some direction, maybe inspire me to do something different?

If you are not going turbo I dont see any reason not to stick with something simple to install like an L20b.Dyl Phill wrote:Hey guys in the next two years i have no idea what im going to do, i hope i get an apprentiship but i might have to go to polytech in which case i cant consider this. but if im on the pay roll I wanna get a new Motor.

Not saying that cause I have one (it was already in the datto when i purchased it) as I prefer a nice hair dryer on my engines
Just think it would be a nice fit and easy to do. Not something to take ages and make you lose patience.

Re: Opinions on motor opition.
according to bart, an L20b in a sunny is a waste. not much difference in power between a worked a15 or L20, and the L20 is heavier.
if you do wanna become a mechanic, a pre-trade course is the best way to go about it. at most it will be 12 months study, and that will give you most of the basic knowledge needed to fix most things on you car. i did a pre-trade, and ive never looked back. definitley will help with getting a job as you will have the basics done at course. and at the end of the course, if being a mechanic is not what you wanna do, atleast you know enough to mess with your own cars and not have to pay to get shit done.
as far as engines for the sunny go, i would say to stick with and a15, with as much as you can do to it(carbs, cam, exhaust etc).
a ca18de swap wont be overly difficult and would have been done before. brock fitted one to his 120y with pretty good results. i just prefer the simplicity and sound of carbs.
better yet, you could go with a ca18 swap, but strap some carbs to the side of it to be different. have thought about doing something like this with my next toy, whenever that will be

Re: Opinions on motor opition.
I'd go with the A15. It's a simple bolt-in, is a huge improvement over the A12, won't upset the balance/handling of the car, won't require driveline mods, and you'll save yourself the expense of a cert.
And if you're not happy with the performance in the future, then look at swapping the A15 for something different, and you won't have lost anything.

Id vote a15 aswell. You can do a lot of cheap mods and they are so easy to work on. Sidies and some flows and you can have a lot of fun

^^^^ What chris said. Start simple, you can always upgrade. You'll have a nice reliable car that will be on the road alot more of the time.Dattochriswagon wrote:If you aint goin turbo or after crazy power

And it's cheaper than going injected.

Re: Opinions on motor opition.
Yeah L series into a B310 is a fair bit of work for not a huge gain IMO
Apart from that depends a lot on your budget - a turbo EFI motor could cost a LOT more than you initially think, by the time you take into account all the things you need to do to get it running, and that's without strengthening the rest of the driveline and upgrading the brakes to cope with the extra power...
hot A15 with twin sidies will be a lot of fun!!

Ok that was a joke. If you can get the same amount of HP out of a worked A15 than a worked L20b then I guess that is good advice

Re: Opinions on motor opition.
Its true tho dude. You can get a fair bit of power out of a small light a15 for a couple grand cost.
Trust me there is a whole lot to doing a engine conversion. I thought the hard bit was the initial mounting of it. The driveline upgrade. Suspension then brakes. Then you got fuel system then wiring then on top of that cert.
Id say you need to go for a drive with someone like Damon in his 1200 ute to appreciate the power a A series can deliver then you will make up your mind fast
