Sound proofing and insulating your Datsun

Post by gingofthesouth »

I am using a product called Anti-Dröhn-Platte. you can buy it in rolls or in 50cm by 50cm sheets. Its very similar to the stuff you will have found already stuck to your tunnel when you took the carpet out for whatever reason.
sounddead3.jpg
It is lightweight (basis weight = 1.225 kg / m² ), has a decent temperature tolerance (flash point> 230 ° C, heat fixed for 2 h to 120 ° C) and fairly is non flammable (flammability according to DIN 75200 = max. 100 mm / min.).

It is firm when cold but very mouldable when heated. One side has an adhesive already with a peel off wax paper cover (like normal stickers).

What you will need:
Anti-Dröhn-Platte (Cost me ~$11 a sheet. 10 sheets will do the whole firewall, floor and tunnel)
Isopropyl or similar
Craft knife or blade
Heat Gun
Something like a soft plastic card to help push it down into the corners.

Its very simple to use.

1. Clean the surface you are adhering the sound proofing to. If it is a shiny surface such as the inside of your door then wipe the whole surface down with some Isopropyl.

2. Remove adhesive and start applying it by rolling it into place bit by bit.

3. Use the heat gun for a couple seconds across the part you are applying to allow it to mould itself into shape and position.

4. Go over the whole surface area pressing the board into every little groove. Use a rubber or soft roller where possible to really make sure it is firmly adhered. Use a heat gun on small pieces as you work over it to soften it up. This will ensure it moulds perfectly to the undulating surface.

5. Use the craft knife to cut small slits to allow tags etc to get through and fold the board back under the tag.

6. Grab a beer and admire your time consuming handy work!

Here is a couple pics after starting it yesterday.

More pics to come tomorrow of it almost finished. I have run out of autodrohn so need to get a couple more sheets.

On my 1600 I have used 10 so far and will require another three sheets. This gives you an idea of the quantity needed to cover the whole floor, fire wall and below the back seats.

Very nice how does this stuff compare to Dynamat????

Im just looking into it now for my 140J before i start putting the dash wiring engine etc back in.

Dynamat is rather expensive so was wondering if your just paying for the name etc?

I thought you would have gone down the Dynamat path too.
John is using it in his Cedric and swears by it.
I know a lot of Hot rodders use it and its the best money can buy
You havent skimped on money anywhere else why start now with average soundproofing

Because I have used this product before and it works very nicely. Not about the money.
Its about using a product you know works and used it before.

Was talking to a mate who owns a car audio install shop and he uses Dynamat and said its a great product, but so too is the one I am using.
As long as the material is mouldable, doesn't become brittle and is designed for sound proofing and insulation then the difference will be negligible.

It moulds well, is in european markets, and has worked perfect for me in my previous cars.

Remember, some people swear by Meguiars, others swear by Mothers. I swear by my Apple computers, others in DELL.

Stick with what you know. I know this has worked for me in the past, and will do so now. Price did not enter in the decision making.

Dynamat by all feedback I have ever gotten is very good. Nobody has ever said a bad word about it. I used it once on my boot to stop drumming and it worked fine.

The stuff I am using works great on the floor and firewall, rear inside guards and I have even used it on the inside of doors (instead of covering under the door cards, I applied it to the inside of the outer skin.

My advice is use whatever you have used in the past if it gave you a good result.

Because once the rest of the pics I have been taking get put in including actually putting it in, it was going to be turned into a HOW-TO.

You know, for somebody who has never installed any sound proofing, and not know where to start.
Will update the first post when I have got it all sorted :)
