help with diff an wheels having a tight spot turning over

Post by sunny79datto »

well iv finally tryed anougher attempt of trying to get my car on the road, due to both my flatm8s loosing their licence so id rather drive my car than theirs..
i brought a diff head put it in.. im about to pull it out an put it back in again to see whats going on,
i put my axels in tryed turning the wheels an it spins then hits a tight spot (from memory think it always has a little) but the thing thats got me is when on axel stands it spins but then when put it on the ground an push it.. it moves for a little bit then locks up,
so just put it back on the stands today an taken the wheel off pulled the axel out an yea still playing up a little..
its a bit frustrating i dont know whats going on with it any ideas or tips be much appreshiated thanks
oh and by the way thats with no diff oil in it yet because want to make sure its all sorted before do that.
im pretty much at the point where im willing to pay someone to come around an do it.. id help if wanted but yea if some cbf then yea otherwise im up to listen for ideas/tips

sounds like you may have a bent axle or maybe one of the bearings has packed in. just a shot in the dark though. or maybe your brake drums are slightly oval and when you adjust them on the loose part, they bind on the tight spot

What happens if you have both wheels off the ground, and the motor in gear so the drive shaft can't turn, and you then turn one wheel? Does the other one turn the opposite direction smoothly? Do you still have a tight spot. Try it with both wheels, going both ways. If thats all fine and dandy, then you know your sidegears, and idler pinions are intact.
Then perhaps try turning the driveshaft by hand with the car on axles stands. And see if you're getting a tight spot that way. Try it both ways. How much backlash does the driveshaft have? Sometimes a cooked pinion bearing can cause the axle to jam when moving forward on overrun. (The wheels driving the axle round rather than the motor)
Does the axle lock when you're pushing it backwards?

hey bart, this is with me throwing the diffhead in got of DylPhil7 i need a 120y driveshaft to match,so this is with no driveshaft hooked up,should be just like a rolling shell.. i had it on axel stands turn the passenger side wheel fowards the drivers side goes backwards but yea has a tight spot.. tryed the drivers side an that was the same..so ended up pulling the passenger side axel out..but after it realised i had the brakes hooked up so that may have been a problem..just went an tryed turning the wheel an it hits a spot like the brakes are stickin on.thats just with on axel in it.. maybe i just need 2 pull both axels out put them back in an try get the brakes adjusted? i duno

Hey Andy,
The self adjuster mechanism will be making it hard to unadjust the brake shoes.
If you look carefully, you'll see a bracket that sits against the adjuster wheel. Get a screwdriver, and lever the bracket off the adjuster. Then you'll be able to unadjust it more easily.

Sounds like you could do to get your drums turned.
Have you tried "Oldatsss" for the drive shaft?
