Its been about 15 years since ive had one of these apart , can anyone tell me, do these motors have a tube that incases the dip stick in the sump??
my dip stick flops around loosely in the hole (going to get hassles on this ) and after a while the dipstick seems to rotate and touch,s the crank.
The outcome of this is that I was beginning to believe that the big end bearings were starting to go, but because it comes and goes it took a bit of working out what was happening, never heard of a crank fixing itself before lol.
it is worse round right hand corners, and when I wiggle the dipstick with the motor running it tried to launch the dipstick into the atmosphere, which nearly had me reaching for some clean undies lol.
the top of the dipstick has a rubber plug round it but its still not enough to stop it flopping around.
anyone else had this problem, and how did you sort it???

ducktape is your answer
Re: A series owners
so it does rely solely on a tight seal at the top? thought that might be the case but im getting old and have started on a quest to do things right, whereas many years ago I would have wound heaps of tape round it and stuffed it in so it didnt move.

Re: A series owners
in africa we make our tape out of ducks, why would you use ducting?
as for the stick wal, i think it does just sit in there. maybe try getting a rubber grommet into the hole?

Wal, yes it does just fit in there, the later models have a tube, near the oil pump, but the front Dizzy ones just have a machined hole in the block. You need to extend the length of the rubber block on the stick by the sound of it, can you find some hose to fit? I have had one seize the engine by getting jammed between the Crank and Main bearing, often they fit better one way then the other, What I ended up doing was cutting the stick off and using it as a plug and making a new dip stick I carried in the boot, often rally guys put dog clips on them to keep them in

Thanks guys , ill head down to para rubber tomorrow and see what they have, the last couple of A series motors I had were A14s so that is why I recall the tube going all the way down.

I Love the duct tape humour!!
I haven't struck this with my front Dissy A12 yet?
it seems to a good seal so far, but it's handy reading the info.
Thanks All.
