L26 Headgasket replacement - pointers please!

Post by Snoozin »

So the oil seeping from between the head and block on my 260C is increasing so the head is going to be coming off for a freshen up and headgasket replacement.

Any pointers for the job? I intend on doing the timing chain, tensioner, waterpump etc. As far as gasket sets go, is there a preferred brand I should look at obtaining? Furthermore, is anyone on here able to assist in obtaining everything I require for a reasonable price?

Assume I'll need:

- headset
- front timing cover set
- timing chain
- tensioner
- assume they have a chain guide of some description
- waterpump
- thermostat

Etc.

Thanks in advance!

Timing kits on Ebay including all the gears, guides etc are way cheaper than in NZ, unless someone has found a source.

I assume you will seeing as you are getting a head set but definitely do the valve stem seals if you are pulling head right off.

The timing sets sometimes have new top and bottom gears in them, the ones I have bought from Repco previously don't but most of the ones on eBay are shown with them. There are two guides and an oil pressure feed tensioner with a rubber pad on it, make sure before you fit the new tensioner that the oil gallery on the back lines up with the hole.

The timing covers are a pain in the ass to seal, also if you remove the timing cover you will probably have to remove the sump and replace the gasket, unless you are very careful removing the cover and can separate the sump gasket from the cover first. If you decide not to do the timing chain etc make sure you have a wedge and don't let the chain go slack or you'll be pulling the timing cover off anyway.

Yeah the timing chain needs doing... it's making a bit of a racket rattling about in there.

Can't seem to find any sets on eBay?

Have found one for $145 NZD landed to suit 260Z, all L26 are equivalent when it comes to timing chains I take it?

All L6s apart from the LD28 are the same in regards to the timing stuff.
