620 halogen head lamps

Post by junkyard dog »

Hi all, wondering if anyone out there has done an H4 headlamp conversion on their old Datsun (no more taking out the grill to replace seal beam units), I recently did one on my ute I've used Halogen P43T 60/55 bulbs with diamond housings in place of the original 60/37.5 watt units, and through ignorance tonight found out that I should have first fitted a relay system (stock unit can't handle the load) blew a fuse lights off complete black out just about missed a corner :!:

anyone know where I can get 1 or 2 suitable relay units from? apparently its a simple install

Thanks Rich

I have done Relay setup in anticipation of H4 install on my 1200 coupe.
I brought a kit out of Ebay Australia.
Had main fuse setup & relay for both low beam & high beam circuits.
also heavier wiring. as I heard a relay install will fry factory wiring,
due to extra current - lucky u just popped a fuse!

A relay prevents your wiring from frying. Just run a beefy feed from the battery to the gravy in side of the relay, then a nice thick one from the gravy out to the lamp. And the same goes for the earths too.

Cheers, well old 4 eyes is back in action no more squinting at night, time being precious took the easy way out and dropped it off at Stan's Auto Electrical (top bloke)
they fitted another relay kit with chunkier wiring leaving the factory stuff intact should I ever want to go back (..er no)

Good shit dude!
With datsuns running the full 12v from the switch to the lamp, voltage drop kills the factory lights. They're like a birthday candle behind a clear glass bowl. lol
