fj20de/ datsun 180sx
I recently just bought a fj20de engine that I'm wanting to mount a turbo, I know it would be easier to just work with a det engine but it's all I could get my hands on at the time. Does anybody have any tips? Or the gear they would sell me to get the engine turbed, taking on this project I know there's alot of work involved. I'm looking at having to buy new cam gears, pistons, valve springs. And I have option of getting a custom made manifold or buying one originally from a det engine but was told I might have problems mounting it due to sizing? Also would it be best running a stock det inlet manifold or the original de one? Wheres the best place to get aftermarket parts for these engines also? I'm open to all opinions or tips/advice!

Aftermarket parts are few and far between, forged pistons and metal head gaskets are available from the US (eBay). There's a few people around that have run turbos on completely standard N/A motors and they make good power and are reliable as long as you aren't too silly with the boost.
The inlet manifold you will need depends on what car the motor you have came out of and how much room you have in the engine bay, the S12 inlets are shorter but apparently the DR ones do fit with very limited clearance in an S12. Exhaust manifolds are also different between S12s and DRs so you might want to get the motor mounted before looking for one. I'm looking at modifying an SR20 turbo manifold for mine, I've seen it done and it doesn't look too difficult.
How much power are you aiming for?

If you get stuck, I have a spare inlet and exhaust manifold and turbo (but no lines) from a DR30 FJ20et.
Me being in Wellington though, would be cheaper to get locally.

Stuart Wilkins Motorsport in Oz has a good range of FJ20 spares (and other datsun goodies)
