SR16ve RWD
SR16ve RWD
Ok Im happy to post what Im doing if anyone is interested.
Re: SR16ve RWD
I wont answer any stupid question
Im only attempting to help others by telling you FACTS about exactly what does and does not work here.
Theres so much BS out there about this kind of thing.
Logic behind the mod
Want to stay in 1600cc class
Prefer to retain Nissan Engine
Car already runs 6 speed Silvia box behind the A15 so SR20 block will bolt straight up after I fit a factory
bellhousing to the gearbox.
Im not aware of any other 1600cc RWD v-tech nissan.
Standard 1600 rated at around 175hp @ 7800 rpm
This is what I have done so far
I purchased a complete SR16vvl FWD engine
I purchased a complete SR20 de RWD engine
Both engine have the same bore size.
Disassembled both, fitted 1600 crank and one piston and rod to check deck height.
Measured and same as 1600 block.
Cold tanked /honed /SR20 block, fitted new frost plugs etc:
Ground the crank (was slightly scoured / too much to polish out)
Fitted ARP rod bolts
New rings different to Sr20 thinner & more expensive typical
Chucked it all in the SR20 DE block.
retained Sr20 girdle.
Used 1600 front cover and oil pump, bolts straight on but a few holes dont line up.
Issues so far.
Main rear oil drain hole needs plugging
Front oil supply needs gallery plug
Front oil supply needs 1.5mm restrictor
Head needs oil supply tapped 1/8npt on side (inlet)
Original oil supply to head needs gallery plug, the 1600 head overhangs the sr20 block.
Used SR20DE Headgasket.
Crank Pulley / Sr20 no good, use sr16.
Sr16 water pump will not fit SR20 block.
Space water pump pulley & Alternator forward 13mm
SR20 Oil pickup holes need slotting to fit 1600 pump.
Use SR16 oil pump and front cover
SR20 front cover timing post is in different position to 1600
Used SR20 water pump pulley running on large diameter of 1600 crank pulley,
Used SR20 cam chain and tensioner.\
Sr20 cam sprockets.
Cam Timing marks lined up perfect.

Re: SR16ve RWD
nice work Glen, thanks for posting this up, it's very interesting.... and tempting....
btw did you notice you beat me by 1 second at that rallysprint!! are you doing the next one? I'm not, I haven't had a chance to look at the car since the last one

Re: SR16ve RWD
Your an action man, good work.
Same as bart said it would be awesome if you could put up some pictures of the front cover holes that don't line up.
Also was that an s14/15 sr20de that you used as the donor block.
That main drain hole that you blocked at the rear you made an external drain that came out at the back of the head where the solenoids bolted too, correct?

Re: SR16ve RWD
Also I've been wondering, it might sound like a dumb question but i figured you'd be able to give me a definitive answer. With the 6 speed behind a s13 (or any other non 6 speed sr20 i guess) is there anyway to use a s13 or 14 flywheel, maybe swapping bell housings and flywheels? I'm pretty sure you'll say the 6 speed one has to be used but it would be nice if there was a way to use an (aftermarket) s13/14 one over an (aftermarket)6 speed one as they are a good couple of kilo's lighter.

Re: SR16ve RWD
This is very interesting,
the later model sr20's have the vvti which is like a vtec correct?
when i first looked into putting my sr20de in, one of the guys from the silvia forum was telling me about using the sr20ve piston and head to get the higher compression and the better head,
so i may have misunderstood things using the sr20 block but with the 16 crank etc the bore size stays the same but the stroke changes, therfore keeping you in the 1600 class?
i will be heading down this track in the future but keeping it 2.0
So Keep posting
thanks

Re: SR16ve RWD
VVT like on the s14/15 silvias just changes the cam timing. Sr20ve works exactly the same as VTEC as in it has a third cam lobe with hhigher duration and lift.
People use sr16ve pistons in sr20de because they give 12:1 comp in a DE. Sr16ve has a shorter stroke but same size bore so to get 11:1 in the sr16ve the pistons need a bigger dome because of the short stroke, hence 12:1 in a sr20de
This car is going to be seriously cool.

Re: SR16ve RWD
so from that i would want to put some sr16ve pistons in my sr20 and still keep the 2.0l capacity and get the high comp?
