Brads Datsun 1200

Post by 1200 Koozer »

Hi Guys. I brought this wee gem almost 2 years ago after spending years envying everyone else. its a 1973 b110 all the way from the manawatu to otago. I stripped the engine bay and all the running gear about a year ago to upgrade the engine from the trusty a12 to a worked A15 which i built in my flat kitchen in dunedin of all places while the body sat lifeless in my old mans garage in cromwell. I brought the engine and got straight work stripping it and getting everything prepped for the machine shop. I wish i had a photo prior to my build. whilst at the machine shop I had it slightly overbored with new flatter pistons and rings which have slightly upped the compression. with all new bearings and big ends. The cam is lumpy as hell stage 3 i believe. On the head it had the valve seats grinded and shaped to allow optimum air flow, dual faced valves ported and polished to fit new extractors and side draft manifold. Unfortunatley no side drafts as of yet. dual valve springs. and new stronger pushrods. Soo after building my engine at the flat the build soon slowed as getting home to work on it wasnt always the easiest. Before installing the engine i prepped the engine bay for a new paint job. once prepped and primed i had to decide on what to paint it. I didnt want to have the same old same old soo i went with somthing i thought was really cool that i seen on a datsun 1600 on jay lenos channel. It is a trunk splatter paint that has a rough cast finish of satin black and white splatters with heaps of clear coats. I think it looks quite cool. After this i installed a new maddat ute crossmember took all the steering and suspension parts and gave them new polyurethane bushes and a coat of satin black. Finally I managed to get the engine in and hook everything up. I trailered it to magoos and had a new 2 and 1/4 inch pipe through coby resinator and small coby muffler sounds great and breaths good. unfortunately that is far as i have managed to get as i have moved to wellington as a site engineer on the memorial park project but ill be home soon enough to put the H165 diff i have planned in and take it too a local dude i know at turbo shop to tune up and get running sweet. Next on the agenda is a brake uphaul and some interior work. Not to many photos never get round to taking them haha. Cheers guys hope you like it ill keep you posted on progress.

Is this the car up on the tard atm?
If you still own this car at labour weekend, you must bring it up for NZ Datsun Nationals. The info will be up very soon.

Do you have the diff yet?
I'm looking at potentially selling the H165 out of my b110.
You need larger U bolts, 1200 ute, or 910 wagon (or L16 powered sedan) U bolt base plates. Also need to shorten the driveshaft a bit too. as well as possibly changing the rear yolk flange. And if it's a ute diff, you need to refit sedan wheel cyinders. As utes have front drums, and with a disc brake front the rear will lock up 1st with the ute rear wheel cylinders.

Yeah when I flick it, it should be complete. I've also fitted sedan style Shock absorber mounts to the spring pads, as utes mount the shock absorbers off the U bolt base plates the same as coupes and wagons. I also replaced the rear brakes, (Backing plates and all) with B310 stuff. The B310's feature self adjusting brakes too. Having to readjust the 1200 style brakes gets old.

I'm having the rust fixed next week. Then I'd like to get it legal. And fix a high rpm missfire it was sporting the last time I drove it. Then I'll have a crack at selling the whole car. Then if there's no takers, Im going to put it back to standard, to sell it. And all the goodies will be for sale separately.
